On Thursday, October 10, the renowned Japanese pianist Hiromi will perform with her ensemble Sonicwonder at Teatro Ristori in Verona. Hiromi will be joined by Adam O’Farrill on trumpet, Hadrien Feraud on bass, and Gene Coye on drums. The performance promises to be an evening of powerful and captivating jazz funk, interspersed with moments of extraordinary pianism.
Hiromi’s performance at the Tokyo 2020 opening ceremony wowed viewers, and The New York Times described her playing style as “athletic, in an Olympic sense: brutally efficient, singularly focused, imperious in its physicality.” In addition to her incredible enthusiasm, Hiromi’s distinct style identifies her. According to The New York Times, “Hiromi’s performances are infectious with influences of swing, groove, and ragtime, as she dances between pop-jazz and blues.” Musical traditions serve as her launchpad, carrying her into the heavens.”
When questioned about her musical genre, Hiromi has repeatedly declined labels. She explains, “I do not want to identify my music. Others can call it whatever they choose. It is just the sum of all I’ve heard and learned. It combines parts of classical, rock, and jazz, but I don’t need to name it. For me, there are only two types of music: those that move my heart and those that do not. I just perform music that touches hearts.”
