The first intervention was a few years ago on the church Chiesa di Santo Stefano . For years, the 5th-century side wall had been defaced with black spray-painted lettering, and the parish priest had been searching in vain for funds to clean up the mess. It took 110 hours of work. That’s the charitable work of the Angeli del Bello – Angels of Beauty -, the volunteers at work for a clean city. Saviors, in particular, of monuments scarred by vandalism and incivility. There are about ninety members and the “beauty teams” are divided by tasks: the poles group, the monuments group, the school group, and so on. The poles group, for example, removes stickers from street signs, cleans up writing on telephone exchanges and mailboxes. There is also the “sécio e penèl” group (a dialect expression ) – in Italian “secchio e pennello, English “bucket and brush” – which removes scars from valuable stone surfaces. Enabling them to clean up the city is a convention that allows them to get their hands on public property immediately, without waiting for permits. For example, they are allowed to cut with shears the padlocks that lovers hang on every corner of the city (oh yeah, even though city of love, it is not allowed or your padlocks will be short-lived anyway). One of the most significant interventions? The cleaning of the bridge Ponte Pietra, with 16 volunteers and 320 hours of work: it took 400 kilos of quartz sand to erase the spray writing from the Roman stele and parapets. Some operations also involved refugees who received a bicycle as a gift. In addition to the Angels, there are also “Little Angels”. About 20 schools including kindergartens, elementary, and middle schools to raise awareness on the ground to respect the environment.
