Starting today Verona sees the opening of the maxi-worksite for the trolleybus line in Veronetta, which will involve a section of Via San Paolo and the nearby section of Via XX Settembre for the first 15 days of the various works that will be completed in 2026. The work will be substantial, with a complete renovation of pavements, roads, sewers and underground utilities: V-reti, Acque Veronesi and Amt3 will work simultaneously.
The works will start today Thursday 6 March with the modification of the via Venti Settembre and neighbouring streets starting at 5.00 a.m., together with changes to the local public transport (Tpl) routes.
Mayor Damiano Tommasi recalls that ‘major public works in large cities are done with three elements: resources, political decisions, and the cooperation of citizens who are asked for complex, but not deferrable, changes in daily habits. It takes time to get used to new situations, we verified this with the City of Nimes street construction site: after two months the city had got used to the inconvenience, now everyone is better off. In this case, the sections of Via XX Settembre will be closed for no more than a few months at a time.
Over the next year and a half, it will take patience and endurance, but as Commander Altamura also said, we are pouring attention and resources here, because it is only right: when you treat an organ of the body, you give more attention to that one. There are urgent matters to be dealt with, so we are taking advantage of the trolleybus construction site, which was planned well before our administration. It is an infrastructure that is needed, certainly improvable, but by now the choices have been made and must be put on the ground responsibly’.
In particular, the streets affected by the changes in the car traffic will be:
Via San Paolo closed to traffic in the section between the intersection of Via Scrimiari and Via San Vitale; Via Scrimiari remains accessible from Via San Paolo coming from Lungadige Porta Vittoria.
Via XX Settembre closed to traffic from the junction between Via San Vitale for a stretch of 200 metres. Access to the side streets Via Antonio Maffi and Vicolo Vetri is prohibited, except for residents; Via San Vitale becomes a two-way street from the intersection with Via Gaetano Trezza to Via XX Settembre.
Parking will be prohibited on both sides; Via Trezza remains one-way, but reversed, from Via San Vitale to Via San Nazaro; Via Cantarane becomes two-way from Via Santa Marta to the University of Verona entrance at number 24. In that section, on the University side, parking spaces have been eliminated to make room for the dual carriageway; therefore, the remaining parking spaces are yellow, i.e. reserved exclusively for residents.
Pedestrian access will always be guaranteed in all areas of the Via XX Settembre construction site, while for driveway owners, businesses and residents in Veronetta who are within the two-hundred-metre perimeter of the construction site, the reserved passes at the Centro and Polo Zanotto car parks will remain active. For all Veronetta pass holders, parking spaces are also reserved in Piazzale Cimitero (from 5.00 p.m. to 9.00 a.m.) and in the Via Bassetti area. The car park in Piazzale Maestri del Commercio can also be used with Veronetta passes.
The traffic changes will also entail changes for the Tpl, with the definition of new preferential lanes already traced during the carnival holidays and the diversion of routes from via XX Settembre to via Torbido and viale Stazione Porta Vescovo. Please note that, in order to facilitate mobility, routes coming from the province can be used to move within the city perimeter with the city fare ticket.
Here are all the traffic changes planned for the first 15 days and the detours and new stops for urban and extra-urban public traffic.
