The iconic Italian training ship Amerigo Vespucci left Doha in grand style, accompanied by the evocative opera arias of the Arena di Verona. Against the backdrop of the Italian tricolour illuminating its majestic masts, the evening culminated in a spectacular concert at the Old Doha Port. Cruise ship sirens joined in the tribute, bidding farewell to what is often described as “the most beautiful ship in the world”.

Over five days, the Vespucci made its debut visit to Doha, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors aboard. This inaugural Middle Eastern stop concluded on a profoundly emotional note, with the Italian national anthem, Il Canto degli Italiani, playing as the crew prepared the final gangway. Onlookers gathered along the quayside, waving farewell as the grand ship set sail, slowly disappearing over the horizon.

Chief Petty Officer, Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto of the Italian Navy described the Amerigo Vespucci as “a custodian of Italian tradition and excellence”. This sentiment resonated with the crowds who visited the Vespucci and the accompanying Villaggio Italia, a bustling showcase of Italian culture, gastronomy, and artistry.

The ship’s visit marked the 30th stop on its global tour, drawing large crowds throughout its stay. The Villaggio Italia featured masterclasses, conferences, and exhibits at the Old Doha Port, providing a rich tapestry of Italian heritage. Notably, the Arena di Verona brought the magic of opera to Doha, with performers delivering renditions of some of the world’s most celebrated arias.

A special performance took place at the foot of the Vespucci, with soprano Eleonora Bellocci, tenor Carlo Raffaelli, and baritone Youngjun Park gracing the stage. Accompanied by Maestro Federico Brunello on piano, the operatic ensemble mesmerised hundreds of spectators, creating a memorable union of maritime majesty and cultural splendour.

As the evening concluded, the Amerigo Vespucci set sail for Abu Dhabi, navigating under full sail on its way to its next destination. It is expected to arrive in time for Christmas Eve, continuing its mission as a symbol of Italy’s enduring legacy and maritime excellence.
