Verona is set to host the Route nazionale 2024, a major event for Agesci (the Italian Catholic Guide and Scout Association), from August 22 to 25. This will be the third non-consecutive edition of the event, following previous gatherings in Bedonia (Emilia Romagna) in 1979 and Avellino (Campania) in 1997. The event will unite over 18,000 scout leaders across Italy, 140 volunteers, and 100 local organizations.

The Route nazionale 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Agesci’s foundation. This significant milestone will be celebrated by a series of meetings, discussions, and debates to define the association’s future direction. The event will provide an opportunity to discuss the actual situation of today’s youth and address the difficulties they confront. Activities will take place around Verona, including the park of Villa Bernini Buri in the San Michele Extra area.

How does Agesci work?

Agesci, the Italian Catholic Guide and Scout Association, is a youth educational organization dedicated to promoting young people’s personal development via extracurricular activities based on scouting ideas and methods. Since its foundation in 1974, Agesci has been dedicated to supporting young people in Italy to develop as good citizens and Christians in an ever-changing world.

The organization highlights the necessity of understanding young people’s beliefs, goals, and difficulties. Agesci’s educational approach encourages a Christian way of life, harmony with oneself, others, and the environment, and gives young people meaningful educational experiences. Agesci uses a leadership paradigm known as diarchy, the co-presence of a man and a woman at every level of associational responsibility.

Collaborations and involvement

Numerous organizations will collaborate with Agesci for the Route nazionale 2024, including Legambiente, Save the Children, the Croce Rossa, UNICEF Italy, Slow Food, and WWF. Additionally, the event will involve the Department of Civil Protection and the Foulard Bianchi community, among others.

Themes and discussions

The program will cover different issues concerning today’s youth and society. Participants will consider, for example, diversity, such as religious and intergenerational differences, or the link between law and justice. Other important topics are global difficulties like the climate emergency and migration problems. Scout leaders will be able to witness several testimonials, engage in discussions about peace and education, and reflect on their religion and the role of God in their lives.
