Sovema Group, a company based in Villafranca di Verona, Italy – a manufacturer of battery production machinery since 1969 and a member of the German Schuler Group since 2022 to develop new solutions for the next European gigafactories – has contributed, with its Cubettatrice, to its customer EnerSys winning the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Better Project Award for sustainability.
EnerSys is an international group that also has a branch in the Vicenza area and offers energy storage solutions with sustainability and energy efficiency as their goals. In its sector, EnerSys is an example of commitment to an increasingly sustainable direction, as evidenced by the two awards it has received from the DOE, the last one received on 4 April 2024.
The Better Project Award recognises companies that succeed in achieving important goals in terms of decarbonisation, energy efficiency and waste reduction. The product that won this prestigious award is the Sovema cube cutter, a machine belonging to the product line dedicated to the production of lead acid batteries.
Thanks to the dicer, a part of the lead-acid battery production process is innovated, replacing a lead melting and re-solidification process, which has high costs and emissions, with a cold treatment. In this way, EnerSys has achieved key results, such as a reduction in CO2 emissions per battery produced of around 20%, an increase in safety conditions for workers, who are less exposed to risks from the production process, a saving of water equivalent to 1,873,575 litres, and a reduction in environmental impact, with a reduction in waste of around 20,000 kg.
