An unusual Verona, the one that hides beneath our feet. The itinerary includes a visit to two evocative underground archaeological areas to discover the lesser-known Verona of Roman times. This is the proposal of Veneto Segreto with three Sundays (18 February, 10 March and 14 April) divided into several times, from 10 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon. Reduced prices: 14 euro for adults, 6 euro for children up to 12 years of age.
The route to discover underground Verona starts from the archaeological area in Via San Cosimo 3, inside the Figlie di Gesù religious institute. This site allows us to appreciate very clearly the evolution of Verona’s defence system from the time of the foundation of the Roman city to the 6th century A.D. In fact, a section of the city walls from the 1st century B.C. is preserved here. They were restored and provided with spur towers during the following centuries, as well as the remains of a domus from the Imperial age that was built near the Roman curtain wall. Enriching the site is the presence of the most visible and well-preserved example of the walls that King Theodoric erected in Verona in the 6th century A.D., just a few metres from the Roman-Republican walls.
We then proceed to the archaeological area of the Capitoline Cryptoporticus in Corte Sgarzerie, located inside the beautiful 15th-century loggia called Loggia del Mangano. The area houses the remains of the structures of the basement corridor that stood at the base of the city’s most important temple, the Capitolium (mid-first century B.C.), and provides an insight not only into how this monument was built and what it looked like in Roman times, but also into the dynamics that led to its destruction and the growth of the city upon itself over time.
